April – May, 2013 I volunteered as a permaculture consultant at SoFair Farms EcoVillage in Fairfield, IA. While there, I worked alongside my friends and colleagues EmilyBreffle, Jenti Shakti, and Amanda Reed–collaborating with (founder) Tom Greene to help make his vision of an ecologically designed, sustainable community a reality.
The four of us lived on-site while renovating an existing farm house and drawing up plans for market gardens, integrated animal systems, orchards, ponds, and an apiary.
During that time we were also able to implement and install several small aspects of our design, including: building a chicken coop, repurposing old wooden pallets by making them into compost bins and cold frames, creating a vermicompost station, building a solar oven out of found materials, and building and planting hugelkulture beds.
May 7th I headed out to Milton, Florida to volunteer as a WWOOFer at Cold Water Gardens–a 360 acre sustainable, agritourism farm. I am still in close contact with the Tom and the gang at SoFair and keeping tabs on their continued progress. I look forward to the next time I am able to visit and lend a hand.
